Article 14 of the Education Act  states that

"14. Every child resident in Québec shall attend school from the first day of the school calendar in the school year following that in which he attains 6 years of age until the last day of the school calendar in the school year in which he attains 16 years of age or at the end of which he obtains a diploma awarded by the Minister, whichever occurs first."

Compulsory Education Start

Compulsory education starts depending on the child's age on July 1st.

Child's age on July 1st
5 The child has no compulsory education obligation. Kindergarten is not mandatory in Quebec.
6 The child must start his/her formal education in school or at home.*

A child who turns 6 between July 1st and September 30th is not obligated to start his/her formal schooling. The parents can therefore choose to:

  • wait until the following year to start formal education at home or at school.
  • start formal schooling at home or at school.

*School boards generally integrate previously homeschooled children into the grade that corresponds to the child's age on September 1st.

End of Compulsory Education

Compulsory education obligation ends at the end of the school year during which the child turns 16 or at the end of which he/she obtains a diploma awarded by the Minister, whichever occurs first.

Child's age on July 1st
15 The child still has an obligation to compulsory education, unless he has received a high school diploma or equivalent.
